A Tracy Update
Mon Jul 19, 2010
Tracy, Chimp Haven’s three-and-a-half-year-old chimpanzee, is growing up! It was not that long ago that she was hitching rides on her mother Teresa’s back. Now, she “simply somersaults to where she wants to go,” says Chimp Haven’s behaviorist Amy Fultz. Amy says Tracy makes a point of going on patrol three times a day with members of the social group in which she lives. That means they walk around the entire perimeter of their habitat to see if all is well in the area. Another of Tracy’s favorite activities is climbing tall trees. In spite of her evolving grown-up chimpanzee behaviors, she is still a baby at heart. According to Amy, although Tracy eats solid foods now, she is still regularly nursing.
