Welcome to the Chimp Life
Planning a visit to Chimp Haven? Here’s what to expect.
Visiting the World’s Largest Chimpanzee Sanctuary
As a sanctuary, Chimp Haven is primarily focused on providing an enriching life at sanctuary for the chimps; therefore, we are not open to the public daily. Throughout the year, Chimp Haven holds special events and opportunities for visitors to experience the sanctuary.
What to Know Before You Arrive
All events and tours require pre-registration or booking.
The sanctuary is located at 13600 Chimpanzee Pl., Keithville, LA 71047. As you arrive, follow the sign to Tours & Event Parking and park in the lot. From there, you’ll enter the black iron gate.
Most Chimp Haven events are held outdoors with limited covered areas; comfortable shoes are recommended. You may also want to bring a water bottle, hat, or sunscreen.
Since the sanctuary is in a rural setting, cell reception may be spotty.
Free parking is available, but may require a short walk to the entrance.
Chimp Haven merchandise is available for purchase using cash or credit card.
Certified service animals are allowed, but please leave all other animals and pets at home.
You are welcome to bring water or other beverages, but alcohol is not allowed on Chimp Haven property.
Not feeling well? If you or anyone in your group has not been feeling well or has been around anyone who has been sick, we ask that you please make plans to attend a future event.
Events typically occur rain or shine. If an event must be canceled by Chimp Haven, ticket holders may receive a refund or they may use their tickets to attend a rescheduled event (if available).
The Chimps
Chimp Haven is home to hundreds of chimpanzees, most of whom were formerly used in biomedical research. At Chimp Haven, they’re given the opportunity to live life like chimps – including the freedom to choose how to spend their days.
During your visit, you may see chimp groups in the variety of habitats and enclosures that we offer at Chimp Haven. Some chimps love being outside and are curious about visitors, while others may prefer to stay in their bedrooms. At Chimp Haven, they always get to choose where they spend their time.
Photography
Chimp Haven welcomes and encourages visitors to take photographs for personal use and to share their experience at the sanctuary with friends and family. We would love for you to tag us on social media @ChimpHaven or using the hashtags #ChimpLife and #ChimpHaven.
While on the grounds, please know that visitors may be photographed or recorded on video by Chimp Haven photographers and videographers, and that these images and likeness therein may be used for the purpose of promoting Chimp Haven. You may choose to opt out by informing the photographer.
Commercial photography and filming at the sanctuary is prohibited without prior permission from Chimp Haven. For commercial photography and filming requests, contact chimphavenmedia@pcipr.com or call 312.558.1770.
Accessibility
Chimp Haven strives to provide a memorable and educational experience for every visitor. Given that events and tours take place outdoors in the sanctuary’s rural setting, please be aware that walkways at the event are gravel and often uneven, and may be difficult to navigate for those with limited mobility. Our parking lot and walkways may also be muddy in the event of rain. Guests should expect to walk on foot to view chimpanzee habitats and access event amenities. Chimpanzee Discovery Day hayrides are not wheelchair accessible; however, other Chimp Haven events may have additional accessibility options. Chimp Haven is committed to improving accessibility for guests and visitors; if you have questions about event accessibility or would like to discuss accessibility options, please reach out to us at events@chimphaven.org.
