No calendars needed here – when spring (or as we like to call it in Louisiana, “first summer”) arrives at Chimp Haven, there are surefire signs all around. Here are the top 10 signs that spring has officially arrived at the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary.

1. Allergies are on the rise…both for their human caregivers and the chimps themselves. Typically we see more allergy symptoms, such as itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny noses in the spring and summer time. Our favorite allergy go-tos are also on the docket for the chimps – they use a lot of the same medications we do! 🤧 💊

2. Keeli’s up to his old tricks. Keeli’s favorite pastime in the spring is to throw ant piles in jest at his caregivers! One of our quirkier male chimps, Keeli is famously known for his “crab display” as he walked through the chutes that connect his bedrooms to his outdoor area. He also loves to throw ant piles when the weather warms and the insects come out in full force. We all know to watch to make sure Keeli doesn’t have an extra special treat for us when cleaning or feeding the group! 🐜

3. Sneaky snakes showing up all around. No one likes a slithering visitor in their home and the chimps are no different! As the weather warms, snakes become more active and occasionally venture into enclosures or habitats…..and the chimps do not like that! We often hear chimps alarm barking when a snake is in their yard, making sure to let their caregivers know that something isn’t where it’s supposed to be and cautioning their chimp friends to steer clear of the area. 🐍

4. All four weather seasons in one day! With spring upon us, it’s not uncommon to see the chimps cuddled up inside in the cool mornings, then sunning themselves on their structure with a carrot in hand in the afternoon. Weather is unpredictable in the spring and the chimps take advantage wherever and whenever is best for them…living their retirement to the fullest! ☀️ 🌧️ ❄️ 🌺

5. Outside exploring and play is abundant. When the sun is out the chimps are out! Tracy and December are sure to be found hanging out in the trees, Pierre and Donnie will be playing in their yard, and Angela will be napping and sunbathing on her structure. If the weather is nice, the chimps take full advantage, and we always see an increase of outside time this time of year.

    6. Spring Chimpanzee Discovery Day! Two times each year the sanctuary opens its doors to the public, and spring means Chimpanzee Discovery Day is just around the corner. Learn more and plan your visit to check out the Chimp Life.

    7. Popsicle enrichment. In the spring and summer, sunbathing can be hot and tiring work for the chimps! They love cooling off after a nice sunny nap with a popsicle or two, just like we did as kids.

    8. Sun’s out, bun’s out. There’s no better sight than a happy chimp absolutely sprawled out in the sun. All over the sanctuary this time of year, you’ll find chimps laying at their most comfortable, with no mind to modesty. Melody is known for her large behind, and when it starts to get warm outside, you best believe she will be spread out enjoying the sun all day every day (as she should!).

    9. Colors are bursting in the habitats. While fall brings changes to the leaves, spring means the habitats are bursting with new colors. Red and white clover are always the first sign that spring is on its way.

    10. Sleeping under the stars. While the chimps have 24/7 indoor/outdoor access year-round, during the winter months, they tend to bed down inside to stay nice and toasty throughout the night. But once spring arrives and the nights get warmer, they love to sleep outside on the structure or in a nest deep in the woods, just like they would in the wild. We love that it’s always their choice, and it’s wonderful to think of them enjoying a beautiful night under the stars.

We’re so thankful the chimps are enjoying another beautiful spring at sanctuary with your support! What are some signs that spring has arrived in your part of the world?
