Love Stories: Pamela & Devon

Chimp Haven
Chimp Haven February 8, 2024

Valentine’s Day is almost here, and love is in the air at Chimp Haven! One of the wonderful things about life at the sanctuary is the friendships, families, bromances, and, yes, even romances, that develop between the retirees. We hope you enjoy a few of our favorite recent love stories.

Allow us to set the scene for this story with the immortal words of the incomparable Taylor Swift:

If you could see that I’m the one

Who understands you

Been here all along

So, why can’t you see?

You belong with me

You belong with me

There’s no doubt in our minds that if she could, Pamela would be listening to this classic tale of unrequited love on repeat as she thinks about ways to get her beloved Devon to return her affections. Alas, this quirky relationship remains rather one-sided, despite her best efforts.

Forty-three-year-old Pamela came to Chimp Haven in 2021, and not long after she was introduced to a new family group which included 39-year-old Devon. Pamela had heart-eyes for Devon immediately, and Devon? Devon was seemingly oblivious.

Devon, the clueless object of Pamela’s undying affection

Fast-forward several years, and Pamela’s feelings for Devon have only gotten stronger. Wherever Devon goes, Pamela follows. They spend an inordinate amount of time together due solely to Pamela’s insistence that he never leave her sight.

Pamela sees it as her duty to look out for Devon, and of course, in her mind, her man can do no wrong.

“Once Devon was showing off by doing a display in front of his group and displayed toward Pamela,” shares Sarah Modlin, Positive Reinforcement Training Technician. “Of course, she’d never get mad at Devon, so instead she started a fight with Whitney, who had nothing to do with it!”

Whitney and Pamela, friends forever except when Pamela misplaces her anger

“Another time Devon was picking on his groupmate, Rero, and Bryan stepped in to defend Rero. Who did Pamela get mad at? Bryan.”

While Devon certainly doesn’t mind having a groupmate who showers him with attention and thinks he’s better than a bushel of bananas, sadly, he pays her little mind otherwise.

“From Devon’s POV, it’s kind of a maternal relationship, but in Pamela’s mind they are lovers who must never be separated,” says Sarah.

To all our readers feeling the exquisite agony of an unrequited crush this Valentine’s Day, your girl Pamela knows exactly what you’re going through – and encourages you to forge ahead.
